Nanotechnology in Sports
In sports, nanotechnology involves the use of different elements and materials that become incorporated into specific sports equipment and attire. Carbon nanotubes (CNT’s) are particularly making a great impact. They are as stiff as diamonds and over 100times stronger and 6x lighter than steel. Carbon nanotubes are 17times stronger than carbon fibers and over 300 times stronger than aluminum, which were the most advanced technology being used in sports. They are inserted into weak areas of carbon fibers which in turn tremendously strengthens materials being used in sports, while enhancing the lightness. With the help of Carbon nanotubes, nanotechnology has helped and will further improve the performance of the equipment and the athlete. Nano-enhanced equipment has been seen in tennis balls and tennis rackets, golf balls, bikes, skis, snowboards, baseball bats, and swim wear. Furthermore, silver nanoparticles are being developed that can abolish the odors involved in sports. The use of nanotechnology is greatly increasing in sports it has the potential to make materials that will allow athletes to perform like never before.
